The national training workshop on “Identification, Development and Implementation of Industrial Synergies” took place on May 20–21, 2025, in Tashkent. The event was organized within the framework of the UNIDO “Eco-Industrial Parks in Uzbekistan” Project implemented with financial support from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and in partnership with GIZ Uzbekistan, aiming to build local capacities for sustainable industrial growth.
The training brought together representatives from pilot industrial zones, academic institutions, government agencies, and private sector partners. Participants were introduced to tools and best practices for industrial symbiosis — the process of resource sharing and cooperation between industries to achieve environmental and economic benefits.
The training was led by UNIDO international experts Mr. Dick van Beers and Dr. Branko Dunjic, who shared global experiences in developing successful synergy models. Topics covered included:
● By-product synergies (reuse of waste and residual materials)
● Shared services and joint procurement
● Supply chain and utility cooperation
● Urban-industrial collaboration
A core feature of the workshop was the interactive group work session, where participants applied UNIDO’s industrial symbiosis tools to map practical synergy opportunities within their industrial contexts. Working in teams, they proposed collaborative solutions across four key domains: resource reuse, service integration, utility sharing, and financing mechanisms. Participants representing the Urgut Free Economic Zone and Ferghana Mechanic Small Industrial Zone showcased specific ideas, including centralized security, joint logistics services, and waste-to-energy concepts.
The training also contributed to the national goal of building an ecosystem of green industrial innovation, where public and private sector actors are better equipped to cooperate, innovate, and align with Uzbekistan’s climate and development strategies. Stakeholders discussed future steps to institutionalize synergy planning tools and integrate them into Resource Efficiency and Cleaner Production (RECP) and EIP master planning activities.
Participants rated the training highly for its practical relevance, clarity of presentation, and quality of facilitation. The materials and tools presented will support further capacity-building at the regional level, ensuring broader outreach and uptake across Uzbekistan’s industrial sector.
The training was conducted under the “Eco-Industrial Parks in Uzbekistan” project, implemented by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) with financial support from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and in partnership with GIZ Uzbekistan.
