Samarkand, Uzbekistan – 2 June 2026 The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), with the support Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, will organize a dedicated side event on Eco-Industrial Parks (EIPs) as part of Eco Expo Central Asia 2026.

The session will take place on 2 June 2026, from 13:00 to 14:00, at the Uzbekistan Pavillion in EXPO CENTER, Silk Road Samarkand.

Through the Uzbekistan Eco-Industrial Parks (EIP) Pilot Initiative Phase II (2025 –2027) UNIDO promotes sustainable industrial development in three industrial zones: Free Economic Zone (FEZ) Urgut, Small Industrial Zone (SIZ) Mechanic and Free Economic Zone Navoyi. The EIP initiative is part of the broader project “Private Sector Development and Economic Policy Advice in Uzbekistan”, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented GIZ in Uzbekistan.

The session will present the Eco-Industrial Parks approach as a practical model for promoting sustainable industrial development, resource efficiency, circular economy practices, industrial symbiosis, renewable energy solutions and low-carbon industrial transformation in Uzbekistan. Building on the results achieved in the pilot zones — Urgut Free Economic Zone in Samarkand region and Mechanic Small Industrial Zone in Fergana region — the event will highlight practical lessons, policy progress and opportunities for scaling up the EIP model across the country.

The session will be moderated by Ms. Tatiana Chernyavskaya, Project Manager, UNIDO. Key speakers will include Branko Dunjic, International EIP Expert from UNIDO, who will present the EIP approach, pilot results and scale-up opportunities; Igor Eromenko, Project Manager, GIZ Uzbekistan, who will discuss German cooperation and green industrialization priorities; Zakir Abdullayev, Senior Research Fellow, Department of Legislation in the Judicial and Legal Sphere, Institute of Legislation and Legal Policy under the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, who will present ongoing work on the institutionalization of EIP policy and regulatory frameworks; and Mirjakhon Yazdanov, Head of Department, FEZ Urgut, who will share practical experience from the pilot zone.

The event aims to raise awareness of the benefits of Eco-Industrial Parks among government institutions, industrial zone administrations, private sector representatives, development partners and experts. It will also serve as a dialogue platform to discuss how EIP principles can support Uzbekistan’s transition toward a greener, more competitive and resource-efficient industrial economy.

Eco Expo Central Asia 2026, taking place on 2–4 June 2026, brings together representatives of business, government, academia, innovators, environmental experts and decision-makers to discuss environmental protection, green technologies and sustainable development solutions for Central Asia.
